Well, I’m off at the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Regional Conference in Miami this weekend.  Drove down from Tampa with my friend and AltDeath.com co-author Sally Bosco.  The trip was, well, horrendous.  Tractor trailer overturned on I-75 and delayed us by about two hours, which meant we made it to the conference hotel with about 15 minutes to spare (instead of the 2 hours and 15 minutes to spare that we’d planned on having.)

The first panel featured authors who’d just recently published their first books including Marjetta Geerling, Debbie Reed Fischer, and Danette Haworth.  It’s always inspiring to hear about folks’ first sales.  My favorite phrase from the panel?  ”I need to conclude my agent search.” (What the then-agentless Danette said when she received “the call” from an editor wanting her first book.)  Every author who courts agents and editors at the same time needs to keep that phrase in their back pocket.

That evening we were off to Books & Books for the author’s reception.  Amazing bookstore.  Let’s just say I could have camped out there all night.

After the reception, Sally and I invited ourselves to dinner with a group of ebullient women.   We charged through the streets of the Miracle Mile in search of food and ended up at an awesome Cuban restaurant called Las Vegas.  The sangria was to die for, and the roast pork was hands-down the best I’d ever had.  The best thing about the evening though was the conversation.  It was so nice to chat with folks who were just as passionate about working with and writing for children.  Definitely a delightful night.

Well, I'm tragic. Tonight is the official last show of Repo! The Genetic Opera at Tampa Theatre, which means it's the last show in the entire state of Florida for the whole month of December. It's been so much fun having cool, quirky Repo! fans invade Tampa Theatre. There have been some amazing costumes (along with some incredibly bizarre ones - www.digibug.com/tampatheatre) and everyone seemed to exit the theatre with a smile on their faces. That in itself made it all worthwhile.

For our "Farewell Repo!" party tonight, we'd planned to have this little group of incredibly talented street performers doing some improvised music, performance art and such. Well, that little group has just become 12 dancers (many of whom are performing in the Nutcracker at the Palladium this weekend), a trumpet player, a mandolin player, and a tambourine player. The've been working all weekend on several set pieces, and I can't wait to see what warped imaginings they've dreamed up. Performers include the Fletcher Dance Project, the Jim Morey Band, and folks from GingerDead.com. On top of that, we've got a live concert on the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ before the show.

It's going to be amazing, so if you're coming to the show, make certain you get there early. Come early and strut your own brand of wierdness and I'll be even happier. This is one last chance for Repo fans in Florida to hang out together, so I hope to see lots of folks there.

Decided that the only way to keep this blog thing going is to do lots of little blog entries, so here's my first.  Drove to Sarasota last night to see Let The Right One In at the Cine-World Film Festival.  It's a creepy, dark subtitled Swedish vampire movie.  Loved the look and feel of it--very atmospheric.  Lina Leandersson played Eli, and she was phenomenal.  I don't want to spoil it for folks, but I strongly suggest you seek it out.
